Business European Nanoelectronics Forum: Companies should stop focussing, says Catrene chairman

European semiconductor companies should end their strategy of focussing down their product portfolios, Enrico Villa, chairman of the EU R&D programme CATRENE, opening the European Nanoelectronics Forum 2013 in Barcelona this morning.

“The industry should reverse its strategy of continuous focussing by enlarging product portfolios to increase the number of European players in the ranking of top players,” said Villa.

To enable the enlargement of product portfolios, Villa said that: “The public authorities should provide a level playing field equivalent to other regions.”

“We need manufacturing,” added Villa, “the European industry is not attractive and not competitive for manufacturing.”

EC vp Neelie Kroes has won a budget of €80 billion to promote microelectronics.

Villa, who retires this year from CATRENE, hails from STMicroelectronics which has been cutting back on manufacturing and focussing its product line in recent years.
