Google buys Wi-Fi hotspot provider
SAN FRANCISCO—Google Inc. said Monday (Nov. 26) it acquired Wi-Fi hotspot provider ICOA Inc. for $400 million.
ICOA (Warwick, R.I.) is a vertically integrated wireless Internet network provider. The company provides design, installation, operation, maintenance and management of WI-FI hot-spot and hot-zone Internet access.
Google (Mountain View, Calif.) said the acquisition is part of a plan to diversify its portfolio of companies. The Internet search giant announced in September that it would sponsor free Wi-Fi at 4,000 hotspots offered by Boingo Wireless Inc., including hotspots in a number of major airports.
