AMD rolls 'Kyoto' server processors

SAN FRANCISCO—Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) Wednesday (May 29) launched a new family of low power server processors that the company claims offer twice the performance at greater power efficiency than Intel Corp.'s top performing Atom processor.

AMD's Opteron X-Series processors, formerly codenamed Kyoto, are described as the highest density, most power efficient "small core" on the market. This category of chips includes the Intel Atom S1260, Intel's highest performing Atom chip, AMD said.

The new AMD processors, X1150 and X2150 beat the Atom S1260 in several performance benchmarks, including single thread and throughput performance with superior power-efficiency, twice the cores and L2 cache with a more advanced pipeline architecture, higher integration and support for up to 32 gigabytes of DRAM—4x more than the Intel Atom processor, AMD said.

The X-Series processors are being integrated into future Hewlett-Packard Co. Moonshot microservers set to be available in the second half of this year, AMD said.

According to Andrew Feldman, vice president and general manager of AMD's server business unit, the Opteron X-Series processors were designed in line with an emerging trend in servers. While server chips in the past were valued for their brute horsepower regardless of the application, new more of today's servers are scaled to handle less intensive applications, he said.

"The sever market is undergoing the death of 'one size fits all' and the emerging of a better matching of work to processor type," Feldman said.

The Opteron X2150, which consumes as little as 11 watts, is the first server accelerated processing unit (APU) system-on-a-chip integrating CPU and GPU engines with a high-speed bus on a single die, according to AMD. This enables customers to take advantage of leading-edge AMD Radeon HD 8000 graphics technology for multimedia-oriented server workloads, AMD said.

The AMD Opteron X1150, which consumes as little as 9 watts, is a CPU-only version optimized for general scale-out workloads, AMD said.

The AMD Opteron X2150 APU and X1150 CPU are generally available now for a cost of $99 and $64, respectively, in quantities of 1,000 or more, AMD said. More information about the processors can be found on AMD's website.
