ASPs weigh as Hynix losses reduced in Q4
LONDON – Hynix Semiconductor Inc. made a smaller loss in the fourth quarter than it did in the third quarter on sequentially increasing sales. The company was hit by declining average selling prices in both the DRAM and NAND flash memory.
Hynix (Icheon, South Korea) reported that it made a net loss of 240 billion won (about $214 million) on revenue of 2,553 billion won (about $2.28 billion) in the fourth quarter of 2011. This compared with a net loss of 563 billion won (about $500 million) made on sales of 2291 billion won (about $2.05 billion) in the third quarter. In 4Q10 Hynix made a profit of 30 billion won (about $26.8 million) on sales of 2,751 billion won (about $2.46 billion).
Consolidated sales of fiscal year 2011 amounted to 10.4 trillion won (about $9.30 billion) decreased by 14 percent from 12.11 trillion won (about $10.81 billion) of 2010. Operating profit totaled 325 billion won (about $290 million) decreased by 89 percent from 2.98 trillion won (about $2.66 billion) in 2010. Net loss for the year was 56 billion won (about $50 million).
Hynix said that moves to finer process geometries and yield improvements contributed to 4Q11 sequential DRAM and NAND flash bit shipment growths of 30 and 24 percent respectively. However, ASPs for DRAM and NAND flash declined 19 and 17 percent respectively.
