  福建省民间艺术馆馆长夏浈女士认为:“过去几年国内艺术品市场的确有泡沫,市场中的投机行为也很严重,多数是由于投资者并未了解艺术品的真实价值就盲目投资所导致,大量不具备收藏价值的低端艺术商品充斥市场并被肆意炒作,在扰乱市场正常价值体系的同时,也滋生风险.当前市场交易趋于谨慎,正是投资者对艺术品价值进行重新审视的结果.不过此轮艺术品市场牛市行情的基础在于社会对美、对文化强烈的需求,投资者也正是看到巨大的增长潜力才涌入市场,资本的进出会影响短期行情走势,但是这种需求本身并未改变,那么具备较高收藏价值的精品一旦遇到合适的价格,又会再度激发市场潜力.”

  趋势:两极分化精品前景广阔

  以国内艺术品拍卖市场为例,上一轮牛市行情自2003年下半年开始逐步上涨,至2007年秋拍达到阶段性高点.

  据雅昌艺术网市场监测中心统计数据显示,2007年秋拍中国艺术品拍卖市场成交总额达到146.31亿元,艺术品拍卖公司数量达到122家,而2008年经历金融危机之后,2009年春拍市场总成交金额仅为68.85亿元,锐减过半,而艺术品拍卖公司数量也仅存92家,各拍卖公司受经济危机影响可谓惨淡经营.

  现在回顾起来,2008年至2009年这段时间,可谓艺术品的最佳买入时机,而2009年之后,国内艺术品市场又迎来一轮波澜壮阔的牛市行情.

  当前艺术品市场的调整与2008年相似,同样是受外围经济环境影响,但是此次回调只是行情的中继,通过观察近期中国嘉德(微博)四季拍卖以及海外拍卖市场发现,买家出手虽然谨慎,但是精品仍然具有非常高的吸引力.

  从专业机构的观点中,我们可以得到如下结论,艺术品市场有其自身的运行规律,不能简单套用其他消费品市场的经验.当前艺术品市场交易氛围没有延续往年的那般火爆,说明市场正在发挥自身调节机制的作用,逐步挤出泡沫,这正是市场各方参与者回归理性的具体表现.与此同时,一些具备较高收藏价值的精品仍然保持强劲的市场走势,极为鲜明的两极分化特征也印证了研究机构的分析结果.寿山石市场中,普通藏品由于品质不高导致成交清淡,而近期在市场中出现的一些精品田黄石和印章依然获得藏家们的追捧,单价并不便宜.这种现象在当前艺术品市场其他门类当中也频频出现.著名收藏家蔡铭超(微博)先生在微博中评论说:“从这现象反映市场是缺货(精品)的,并不缺买家.”说明大家还是看好这个市场未来的前景.

  机构:提升审美注重收藏价值

  由于投资者对此次艺术品市场行情理性回归的过程预期不足,导致市场中弥漫恐慌情绪,部分寿山石商家感到经营有些吃力,也有部分经营者在竞争中被淘汰.

  日前台湾收藏家、中华印石收藏协会理事汤正博先生在出席海峡艺术品产业研讨会时,结合台湾艺术品市场的历史经验为寿山石经营者提出建议:“台湾经济发展速度曾一度减缓,当时不少艺术品公司纷纷倒闭,(经营机构)只有建立在真正以收藏价值为基础、以收藏爱好为宗旨的经营理念上才能够最终生存下来,并始终屹立不倒.”在《2011年度寿山石市场分析报告》中,福建省民间艺术馆也提出相似的观点——目前寿山石收藏爱好者的审美水平整体提升,对寿山石雕的需求从精致转向雅致.这种审美的提升必然会打破原有的市场格局,对创作者和经营者来说都面临新一轮的挑战,尤其是寿山石拍卖行业,仅仅成为寿山石的中间商已经不能适应市场的变化,应当主动承担艺术品经纪人的职能,对于他们来说,不仅要保证自身的职业操守,更要具备过硬的专业技能,具体表现在对艺术品和艺术市场有较深入研究和实践,能够旗帜鲜明地提出价值标准,帮助艺术家和收藏家在市场上做出正确的判断.

  单纯的“赌石”在杭州正遭遇水土不服……

  在岳王艺术城,一家专门以赌石为经营内容的店面,偶尔会有两位市民伸头进来看一下.店员万鹏说:“有时候一天都开不了张.”万先生透露,这家一度在杭州开出五家门店的翡翠企业,将会只保留一家门店,“与北京相比,杭州人似乎对赌石兴趣不大”.

  就在三年前,也是在岳王艺术城,杭州首家大型的赌石会馆的亮相曾吸引了不少人的眼球.然而三年之后,这家赌石会馆已经销声匿迹.

  有业内人士分析:浙江人投资偏理性,对于靠碰运气发财的项目不是很感兴趣.而当下银根紧缩、房产市场调控,让原本愿意花钱买这些的消费者捂紧了钱袋子,都是原因.

  原本春节过后是传统玉石的销售旺季,“今年春节的成交量比去年下降了一半”,杭州收藏品市场的主管崔吉传告记者,而去年春节前后还没有太明显的变化,崔吉传表示,玉石交易的回落要滞后金融危机一年左右的时间.

  崔吉传说,玉石生意的滑坡其实从去年下半年就开始了.去年年底玉石成品的价格基本上不涨,甚至还出现了微跌.

  有分析认为,去年下半年开始,由于游资撤离,翡翠市场总体价格走低,低端翡翠市场则回归理性.“最近几年翡翠价格被炒得很厉害,几乎每一季能增长10%到15%,有些一年可以增值50%以上.”崔吉传说.

  同样是收藏品交易商城,杭州吴山通宝城相关负责人在接受采访时也说有明显的感觉愿花大钱买收藏艺术品的人的确比往年少了.“以前有的房地产老板来吴山通宝城采购,一次性就购买几百万元”,现在这样的老板很少见了.

  不过尽管当前的购买力的确处于疲软状态,这位负责人相信这个过程不会持续太久.“一般做收藏品生意的商户抗跌能力都很强”,他说收藏品行业有句老话“三年不开张,开张吃三年”.另外,真正的好货价格只会涨不会真正大跌,高端翡翠价格将继续坚挺.

  目前还在岳王艺术城有摊位的这家翡翠企业,曾经在上塘路的新青年广场开出4000平方米的集餐饮、赌石为一体的玉福祥赌石会馆,并在杭城开出了五家分店.不过万先生表示,纯粹的赌石在杭州没市场,公司打算把4家门店都关掉,就留吴山通宝城一家.

  带着这一消息,记者向云南玉福祥珠宝有限公司董事长刘芸升求证.他表示,公司2009年进入杭州市场,由于公司的设计团队和加工厂都在云南,店里的翡翠原石,一旦顾客购买后,无法加工成成品,这让一些顾客兴趣不大.现在公司将把其他分店全部整合到吴山通宝城,开设为杭州旗舰店.

  “一块大石头,它的价值到底有几许?有人说它内藏上亿财富,有人说它比较普通,并无特别引人之处.到底谁说准了?当场打开验证,结果是这样的:说对的人,欢欢喜喜地把石头抱回家,去享受财富成倍增值的乐趣;没说对,也不要紧,珠宝商打折把石头收回,下次你还可以再跟他去较劲一番.”2008年,中国美术学院西湖艺苑联手北京海泉珠宝有限公司和北京华夏典藏文化传播机构,联合将赌石文化引进杭城,有媒体这样描写这个当时的新奇事物.

  然而,这个新奇事物并没有在杭州刮起“杭儿风”.

  “刚开始那阵子还挺热乎,几场赌石拍卖会下来也有不少买家赌赢了,但随着去年经济形势的不明朗,本地人的投资取向也趋于稳健,使得赌石市场一下子又冷了下来.”参与把赌石文化引进杭城的杭州石宝斋负责人胡柏荣说,“当时从缅甸进了大大小小上千块翡翠原石.目前根据浙江人理性的投资需求,我已经在去年下半年暂停了赌石业务.”

  搞实业出身的浙江人

  理性对待“赌石”

  在北京,玉福祥已经开出了38家分店,据万鹏讲,一天最起码几万元的营业额,这与杭州生意冷清形成了鲜明对比.

  岳王艺术城钿玉堂的老板桂如超接触翡翠已经十来年了,每年三次的缅甸公盘他基本上都会去.

  “赌石需要具备两个条件:一是行内的眼光,能够分析计算出这块石头能做什么样的产品,大概价值多少;二是具备相当的经济实力,现在好的石头越来越少,肯定是价高者得;除此之外就还需要魄力和看运气了.”桂如超说,现在店里就陈列着一块去年“赌”回来的翡翠,不过这块石头,桂如超输了好几十万.对于像桂如超这样的专业人士都没有十足的把握,对于外行来说,更是很难通过这样的形式赚到钱.

  “赌石切涨的成功率可能就万分之一.”胡柏荣说,经过三年的经营他发现,搞实业为主的浙江人在投资理念上更为理性,因此肯拿钱来购买原石的还是少数.

  有业内人士表示,真正的赌石还是在缅甸.而流入到国内甚至沿海市场的石头要不本身价值已经不大,要不就是已经过多个专家手,“这种专家都拿不准的东西,你能保证你一定赢”?因此,投资理性的浙江人不会轻易把钱投到这个风险比股票还高的产品上来.

  中国收藏家协会玉器收藏委员会的常务理事来杰说,这本是原产地的交易模式,放到市场终端来,违背了经济规律,在浙江开不下去,很正常.

  “玉不琢不成器.”石宝斋总经理胡柏荣认为,真正能实现翡翠价值的,还是要让这块原石经过打磨、设计、雕琢,赋予人文的内容,才能实现其价值.“自2009年末我们便开始与中国美术学院国画系的数位教授接洽,尝试将传统国画的花鸟鱼虫、人物、山水等精髓展现于翡翠神秘的原料之上,并以翡翠雕刻大师的精湛技艺将国画的美轮美奂完美展现.”胡总饶有兴致地谈起了他对翡翠的理解和创新运用,“目前已有数件国宝级翡翠国画作品完成了雕刻,正在进行后道工序的制作.”众所周知,翡翠本已是价值斐然的宝石,再配以名画家们独具慧眼的巧妙设计、雕刻大师们巧夺天工的精心雕琢,三者相辅相成,的确会创造颇具艺术收藏价值的传世瑰宝.据胡总介绍,目前正在构思将清明上河图、富春山居图等历史名作以及西湖全景通过翡翠长卷来展现,相信一定会成为别具匠心的艺术珍品,吸引更多理性投资者的眼球.

  “一刀穷一刀富”,一块石头一旦解开后,不管切涨还是切跌,如果没有途径进行加工,对于购买人来说就是一块石头.

  经过两年的尝试,纯赌石并不好做让玉福祥开始调整其经营策略.董事长刘芸升介绍,除了赌石项目,今后在其旗舰店内更多的是翡翠成品,以及对于翡翠原石的设计、加工、生产的一条龙服务.刘芸升表示,由于高中低端不同的消费群体其需求不尽相同,他们将根据不同的需求提供对应的产品.

This year Xilinx walked off with the award for the Ultimate SoC (System-on-Chip) Product of 2011 thanks to its 28nm Zynq™-7000 extensible processing platform (EPP). The award was given to Xilinx at UBM Electronics’ 2012 ACE Awards ceremony held in San Jose yesterday. Cadence’s Virtual System Platform, which is used as the Zynq-7000 EPP Virtual Platform, was also recognized for an Ultimate Product award for software.

The Xilinx Zynq-7000 EPP is a family of devices that combine a complete ARM® dual-core Cortex™-A9 MPCore™ processor-based SoC with integrated 28nm programmable logic. Each device is a processor-based system, capable of booting an OS from reset without needing to program the programmable logic. It enables system architects and embedded software developers to apply a combination of serial (using the ARM processor) and parallel (using programmable logic) processing to applications that require high levels of performance.

SAN FRANCISCO—Micron Technology Inc., SK Hynix Inc. and Toshiba Corp. are all in the process of throwing their hats in the ring to acquire all or part of bankrupt Japanese DRAM vendor Elpida Memory Inc., according to media reports.

Elpida, Japan's only remaining DRAM vendor, filed for bankruptcy last month after failing to find investment or get a second injection of government funding. Elpida is soliciting bids from potential investors in an effort to pull itself out of bankruptcy protection.

Japan's Nikkei newspaper reported Thursday (March 29) that, after initially turning down an opportunity to invest in Elpida prior to the company filing for bankruptcy, Toshiba had decided to make a bid for Elpida. The report said Toshiba could seek financial assistance from the government-backed Enterprise Turnaround Initiative Corp of Japan.

The Japanese government reportedly urged Toshiba to invest in Elpida in January, prior to the company's bankruptcy filing. But Toshiba, which itself excited the volatile DRAM industry years ago, reportedly declined.

Micron, which has reportedly been in negotiations with Elpida for several weeks about possible investment, plans to make a bid for Elpida, according to a report by the Reuters news service, which cited unnamed sources. Goldman Sachs is acting as Micron's financial advisor on the bid, according to the Reuters report.

In an email exchange with EE Times, a spokesman for Micron declined to comment on reports of Micron bidding for Elipda, citing a company policy against commenting on rumors.

SK Hynix, the South Korean memory chip vendor formerly known as Hynix Semiconductor, said in a regulatory filing Friday that it had filed an initial bid for Elpida, according to a separate Reuters report. The report, which indicated that the deadline for initial bids fell Friday, said Hynix indicated it would decided whether or not to make a formal bid for Elpida after conducting due diligence.

SAN FRANCISCO--Audio processor maker Audience is reverse engineering the human hearing system to make shouting down the phone in a noisy nightclub a thing of the past.

Using its earSmart voice processor, using two microphones that work like human ears, Audience’s chip enables analysis of sound in much the same way as the human brain, which when processing audio decides what to remove, what to keep and what to enhance.

Using computational auditory scene analysis (CASA), the processor is able to manage the characterization, grouping and processing of complex mixtures of sound, which means it can hone in on the human voice and filter out background sounds, even if those sounds are overpoweringly loud. The system on a chip also suppresses echoes and other irritating audio effects that affect call quality.

The chip then automatically equalizes and adjusts voice volume so a person can hear and talk naturally, whatever environment they’re in.

Each and every year, there are a lot of products that come before the editors of EETimes and EDN and each year we pick the ones that we believe are the most significant contributions to the industry. This results in the UBM Electronics ACE (Annual Creativity in Electronics) Awards. This year Xilinx walked off with the award for the Ultimate SoC (System-on-Chip) Product of 2011 thanks to its 28nm Zynq™-7000 extensible processing platform (EPP). The award was given to Xilinx at UBM Electronics’ 2012 ACE Awards ceremony held in San Jose yesterday. Cadence’s Virtual System Platform, which is used as the Zynq-7000 EPP Virtual Platform, was also recognized for an Ultimate Product award for software.

The Xilinx Zynq-7000 EPP is a family of devices that combine a complete ARM® dual-core Cortex™-A9 MPCore™ processor-based SoC with integrated 28nm programmable logic. Each device is a processor-based system, capable of booting an OS from reset without needing to program the programmable logic. It enables system architects and embedded software developers to apply a combination of serial (using the ARM processor) and parallel (using programmable logic) processing to applications that require high levels of performance.

At the ceremony, Xilinx was also recognized as a finalist for Company of the Year, while Xilinx’s Virtex®-7 2000T stacked silicon interconnect device was a finalist for Ultimate Digital IC of 2011. Xilinx’s Spartan®-6 Consumer Video Kit 2.0 was also recognized as a finalist for Ultimate Product of the Year in the Development Kits category.

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Operating system vendor Enea AB (Stockholm, Sweden) announced at the DESIGN West exhibition that it is now supplying Enea Linux together with some complementary technologies.

Enea Linux is a Yocto-based Linux distribution available with customized services and support. In addition, Enea is launching means to enhance the performance and applicability of Linux to networking infrastructure.

Light-Weight Runtime Threads (LWRT) provides improved real-time characteristics such as scheduling, message passing and resource management functionality.

The Enea Packet Acceleration foundation (PAX) will be a modular, graph structured framework designed for high performance hardware-accelerated packet processing. Virtualization is provided through the micro kernel based Enea Hypervisor.

"With Enea Linux and our innovative value-added technologies we have a powerful solution for addressing the Linux and realtime operating system challenges that customers building the next generation networking infrastructure are faced with," said Anders Lidbeck, President and CEO of Enea, in a statement. "Working closely with leading telecom manufacturers we have tailored a Linux distribution that meets the industry's key requirements on flexibility, reliability and performance."

Enea Linux is available for evaluation on Freescale P4080, LSI ACP3448 and AMCC PPC440 processors. The Enea Polyhedra relational database system, the Enea LINX inter-process communications service, and the Enea Gateway (connecting Enea Optima tool suite with Enea’s RTOS targets) will be integrated in the first Enea Linux release.

  昨日起,一场别开生面的“象形雨花石展”在南京雨花台风景区的雨花石博物馆举行,888枚“象形雨花石”让人大开眼界.榴莲果、芒果、葡萄……博物馆里,一盘盘几乎乱真的“果肴”让人称奇,460枚雨花石组成的“华夏盛宴”更让人垂涎,“油炸鸡腿”、“烤卤猪头”、“白扒广肚”.这些雨花石来自南京雨花石协会副秘书长、摄影家汤先锋的收藏.整个展览为期两个月,5月28日结束.

  看看他收藏的石头宝贝

  “罗汉果”上装把子能骗人

  几天前的一个下午,当记者走进汤先锋的家时,你会发现没地方插脚,满地都是一个个盘子、碟子.“盘子里都是石头,这是一桌水果宴席.”老汤拿起一个梨子让记者品尝,知道这位玩家,玩的是石头,所以记者不敢对梨子开口.于是他自己将梨子放进嘴里,咬了一口,是真的梨子.接着,老汤又从盘子里拿起几个罗汉果,有了前面的诚意,记者毫不犹豫地伸手去接,没想到这次上当了.老汤说,他忙了一夜,就是给这些石头打扮,按照水果的分类,装上不同的把子.

  扬子晚报记者看到,这桌水果宴有数十道,分3个玻璃转盘,最中间的是一组葡萄,一个椭圆白瓷盘里盛着紫红色的密植葡萄,周边6个瓷盘也全是葡萄.外围的两层盘子里,苹果、梨子、柿子、杏子、芒果、香蕉等水果一应俱全,3层共盛了满满56盘178枚雨花石,组成“硕果飘香”系列.

  “糖藕”里灌米饭还冒热气

  “水果宴”只是汤先锋展览的配角,共123盘的“华夏盛宴”还没“开席”.在客厅背后,有一间密室,很少让外人进.记者走进这间大约10个平方的房间,一张罗汉床上没有任何铺盖,只有几块玻璃台板,板上摆放着一个个用塑料膜密封的盘子.“这张床是件古董,原先买下是想给客人歇息的,但客厅全都被石头占据了,我自己也不曾坐过它,只好让位给石头了.”

  除了罗汉床摆满了“石盘”,床边也堆放着一个个很大的塑料箱子,里面全是密封好的瓷盘.老汤随便打开一个,一段“糖藕”展现在眼前.老汤说这是他的看家宝贝,不仅外形逼真,就连莲藕里面的空心都惟妙惟肖,空心中居然还灌满了米饭,仿佛冒着热气,从炉子上刚刚端下来.而一盘“紫茄子”更是叫绝,靠近把子的润色清晰可见,可谓是绝品.

  他就这样爱上了石头

  穿越沙漠时捡到一块“烤红薯”

  作为玩家,老汤玩石头10年都不到,之所以他玩出了名堂,靠的全是独特的创新意识.老汤告诉记者,七八年前,他背着摄影包,穿越蒙古的沙漠上.一次他坐在沙漠中,偶然一伸手从沙子中摸出一块石头,活像个烤红薯.从小生活在徐州农村,老汤说如果没有红薯,他活不到今天,红薯对他有着“救命之恩”.他没有丢弃这块戈壁石,把它塞进了摄影包中.

  从此,老汤开始与石头结下渊源,他开始四处寻找这样的石头.可是,他跑来跑去,南京玩石头的人,大部分都是玩放在水中看图纹的雨花石,哪有什么象形石?可老汤有股不服输的劲头,他经过在六合和仪征等地无数次的寻访,如愿以偿.说来也巧,居然他在清凉山又寻到一枚“山芋”,比那枚戈壁石还要逼真.

  专门收藏蛋形石,已有三千枚

  对六合当地采石的乡民来说,老汤相中的石头,他们根本就没往眼里去,要想寻找,必须得亲自上山.为此,老汤专门买了一辆车,一到周末就出发.有时一去就是一整天,连饭都顾不上吃.一次,老汤为了寻找石头,爬上了采石场的悬崖,不小心脚下一滑,他连人带相机滚下七八十米的山谷,同去的石友过了半天才找到他.

  从此,老汤玩石头玩命出了名,当地乡民见他就开玩笑说:“玩蛋来了.”因为,老汤有阵子专门挑雨花石中的蛋形石买,大伙也知道他的“怪癖”.开始,大家都很便宜地卖给他,后来,2009年老汤举办了展览,出版画册,大伙一下明白了,原来那些毛糙的,不起眼的雨花石也是宝贝.后来,跟着老汤的玩法的人越来越多,蛋石价格也越涨越高.他告诉记者,他收藏的各种七彩蛋石,已经达3000多枚.

  填补象形类雨花石的空白

  汤先锋说,他想通过这次展览告诉大家,雨花石不仅是“富人”玩的,老百姓也同样玩得起.而且,他还想证明,玩石头,绝不只是看价钱,最重要的是懂得欣赏,与石头建立友情.看着自己满屋子的石头,老汤说,“我绝不是为了拥有这些石头,我是想通过我的创意,将雨花石推向世界.”

  在老汤心中,传统的玩法,把雨花石放在水中,只看图文,不是不好,但显然过于单一,已经不能与世界接轨.“创作‘华夏盛宴’、‘水果宴’,是为了填补雨花石象形类的空白.希望我的探索,能为雨花石文化开创出一条新路子来.”老汤感慨地说.

内容摘要:玉在中国人的心目中有着无比美好的形象,被认为是光荣和幸福的化身,是刚毅和仁慈的象征,已经深深地嵌镶在博大的中国文化之中。玉石历经沧桑岁月,仍旧美仑美奂、光彩不改。笔者在多年的从艺历程中,发现具有着“玉石之王”的翡翠和“后起之秀”的黄龙玉是雕刻艺术家青睐的品种,本文将从翡翠和黄龙玉独有的特点出发来谈它们在玉石雕刻中的运用。

  “翡翠齐火,络以美玉。流悬黎之夜光,缀隋珠以为烛。金玉阶,彤庭辉辉。珊瑚琳碧,孺珉磷彬”,这是《西京赋》咏玉的名句。中国玉器经过七千年的持续发展,经过无数能工巧匠的精雕细琢,经过历代统治者和鉴赏家的使用赏玩,经过礼学家的诠释美化,成为了一种具有超自然力的物品,成为了人生不可缺少的精神寄托。玉已深深地融合在中国传统文化与礼俗之中,充当着特殊的角色,发挥着其他工艺美术材料不能替代的作用。
  中国有句至理名言,叫“他山之石,可以攻玉”,这道出了琢玉的真谛。事实上,巧夺天工的玉器,不是雕刻出来的,而是利用硬度高于玉的金刚砂、石英、柘榴石等“解玉砂”,辅以水来研磨玉石,琢制成所设计的成品。所以,用行话来说,制玉不叫雕玉,而称治玉,或是琢玉、碾玉、碾琢玉。琢玉的技巧是高超的,而治玉工具却是简陋的。语言为案例,来分析、论证剪纸艺术在城市景观空间中审美的独特性和可行性,以此为剪纸艺术的广阔发展和城市景观空间设计的发展思路提供了新的理念和方向。
  城市的概念属于非常复杂的社会范畴,它涉及到政治、经济、文化、历史等诸多方面的内容。由于不同的文化背景、经济状态以及社会意识形态,人们对于什么是“好的城市景观”会有各自不同的答案。20世纪80年代兰州黄河岸边的景观雕塑和公共空间设计,确立了自己的形象并影响深远,如《黄河母亲》《西天取经》《激流勇进》等雕塑作品,这些作品周围的空间景观经历了30年的岁月,在今天依然散发着独有的魅力。近年来如“兰州儿童公园”和“龙源”的景观空间又成为兰州城市的一大亮点。其独特性在于,在景观空间中不同程度地应用了民间剪纸的造型语言,并使之成为空间主题的一部分。在儿童公园景观空间中,像屏风一样的立体装饰墙上镶嵌着用红色钢板材料制作的剪纸,巧妙地将剪纸的平面性应用在立体的空间造型中,由于采用了剪纸镂空的特点,整体装饰性和通透性很强,就像中国画中追求“虚实”的原理一样。作为儿童的主要活动场所,使儿童在整体空间中既能体会游戏时的快乐,又能得到民间艺术潜移默化的熏陶。对于整个景观来讲,无论其独特性、创造性还是实用性和美观性在此逐一得到了体现。因此,城市形态和城市景观对生活在城市中的人们会产生巨大的影响确是不争的事实。我们应该多多探索民间传统文化艺术如何嫁接并融汇在当代生活的方方面面,如兰州“龙源”属于兰州滨河路上的标志性建筑,和儿童公园一样也采用了剪纸艺术语言,与立体的造型相结合成为整个龙源空间的点睛之笔,透过火烈烈的镂空剪纸屏风,流动的黄河从后穿越而过,与安静祥和、古拙质朴、粗犷奔放、单纯明快的“剪纸”相互映衬,有着强烈的空间艺术生命力。其完整的造型、独特的空间艺术视觉显示出剪纸艺术语素的独特魅力。
  剪纸艺术在过去曾被看作“粗俗”“雕虫小技”,被打入“大雅之堂外的另册”。但剪纸艺术以其所蕴含的巨大精神力量,象山花那样倔强地生长,一代代传承下来,今天她逐渐被人们所发现,带给人们惊诧和心灵的震憾。在今天一味西化的空间设计意识充斥、泛滥的状况下,借鉴民间剪纸元素,汲取民间剪纸艺术的营养是十分有益的,从而对提升城市景观空间的艺术品味、激发民众的地域自豪感、以及增强新形式、
  笔者从14岁开始在莆田民间习事传统木雕工艺,26岁创办莆田市艺峰工艺厂,原先以设计制作出口到日本寺庙古建装饰的平雕为主,但因市场竞争激烈,订单有限,企业发展维艰。于是,我开始谋划转向发展。经反复的市场调查,发现一些原先从事木雕的朋友在转向从事玉雕以后,发展势头良好。我便先与几位交情甚深的中国台湾客户商议,由我厂试产一些小件玉雕艺品,例如,我将莆田木雕的传统题材《三羊开泰》《麻姑献寿》等以玉的材质来雕刻,然后经他们的店铺及销售渠道试行推广;初试成功后,客户的兴致也来了,订单便逐渐变多变大。不仅小件传统玉雕人物,动物等各种题材的订单多了,而且中、大件玉雕佛像的订单也多了,甚至大型西方体裁的玉雕人物的订单也多了起来。玉料越进越多,越进越大;设备也越添越多,越添越新。短短几年时间,企业己经成功开发投产包括缅甸玉、黄龙玉、汉白玉和翡翠雕刻佛道神像、西方人物、动物艺品达五百多类,一千多个花色品种。产品远销欧美、日本、新加坡、马来西亚和台港地区,深受海内外客户好评。
  每次从云南到缅甸北部密支那地区购买玉料,都是难忘的学习过程。识货的,可以用较低的进价购得品质上乘的好料。不识货的,则可能枉费上倍的进价贴得品质下等的次料,甚至假货。因为企业产品大部分以佛像为主,所以我购买的材料大部分为缅甸白玉,其中也有备受青睐的翡翠。一些缅甸白玉会含带绿色,甚至含带黄石,如果以自为主,兼具绿黄紫等色,即属难得上品,就可以设计成配有道具、花叶巧色背景的佛像或花鸟巧色的摆件,这种作品的艺术附加值必然成倍增加。
  利用“巧色”是中国玉雕工艺的绝活,是根据一块玉料中巧出的颜色来设计作品,使玉料的不同颜色被应用得恰到好处而且非常巧妙,使天然的色斑在雕件中起到了点石成金的作用。说到巧色,我想以翡翠这种材质来分析。翡翠,是玉的一种,颜色呈翠绿色或红色,被称为“玉石之王”。郭沫若赋诗赞日:“玉王称翡翠,含耀尚流英。浓绿春心动,凝装古德馨。瑕瑜犹易辨,人鬼实难分。透视开门子,陶然赌石灵。”翡翠是世界五大珠宝之一,它具有着自己的特点:一是它的色泽绚烂、多彩多姿,有红翡,黄翡、绿翠、紫罗兰、白青等许多颜色,这么多种颜色能够齐聚在同一块玉料之中,这是其他玉石所没有胀二是其种类丰富,它是一种多晶体,其晶体的粗细、晶形的不同影响到它的透明度;三是可遇不可求,翡翠玉材的表现和颜色色彩、分布等各不相同,很难找到完全相同的翡翠;四是几乎所有的宝石均可用重量计价,雨翡翠具有的上述几大特性则要求综合衡量,没有一种标准的公式定价;五是翡翠的抗压性和抗热性很大,这些特有的物理性质提高了它的收藏保存价值。
  在我创作翡翠玉雕《硕果累累》中,采用的则是一块粉紫带绿的翡翠,晶莹剔透。在设计之时,以一块紫色为底,其上带有绿色的质地较细,透明度较好的粉紫翡翠上品为雕材,将绿色表层雕刻为茂密的葡萄叶,但见叶下藤蔓缠绕、硕果累累,葡萄架下荫凉处欢快的两只鸭子又令画面平添几分动感。作品构图风趣,取色巧妙,是一件质地、形色、工艺俱佳的作品。而我创作的另一件绿色含紫的翡翠玉雕《屏风十二花神》,以屏风的形式将十二花神展现其

  花开两朵,各表一枝:再说黄龙玉,又称龙黄石,是一种新兴美玉。在中华传统文化中,黄色最为尊贵并带有神秘的色彩。国人一直都在致力于黄色玉石的发现,以至于田黄石一出世就被封为石帝,为皇家和显贵专宠。黄龙玉在玉雕行业中,是一种堪称后起之秀的玉种,有和田玉之温润、田黄之色泽、翡翠之硬度、寿山石之柔韧,观之晶莹欲滴,抚之温润腻手。既可以是把玩的原石,也适合雕刻成各种摆件、饰品。黄龙玉,依出产地不同,可分为籽料、草皮料、山料等。目前市场价格最高的是籽料和草皮料。由于长年累月历经流水、山风的冲刷,赋予这两类原石滋润色彩和通透的灵气。黄龙玉的摩氏硬度6.5~7,与翡翠相当,比和田玉稍高。从时间来看,和田玉“出生”有7000多年。翡翠“出生”有300多年,黄龙玉只有7年。短短7年间,它从几毛钱一斤飞涨到了万元以上,创下了中国玉石史上的一个涨价奇迹。黄龙玉雕的研创要领有四点:即本身玉质、造型设计、作品意境、文化内涵等。
  一、本身玉质:赏析黄龙玉雕件酋先就要看它的自身品质:颜色、硬度、透明度、光泽等。
  二、造型设计:黄龙玉雕就造型设计而言主要应把握三点:玉雕物象的结构层次及空间表现力、色调的处理运用、形态及力点的美感。
  三、作品意境:玉雕的意境是玉石神韵的体现,是匠师精神的寄托与延伸。同一件黄龙玉雕件,不同的人可能有不同的精神感受,这就取决于个人的品味与境界的高低了。
  四、文化内涵:黄龙玉雕题材丰富多样,它承载和沿继了中华民族丰富的玉文化内涵。“玉必有工、工必有意、意必吉祥”。对玉石的品味和玩赏,自古以来就蕴含着文化,美学、宗教以及人们对未来的美好期盼和精神层面的享受。赏析黄龙玉雕件,不仅仅是评判它的审美价值、市场价值,也是在品读一个故事、分享一份情感,感受一个生命,更是一种自由自在的审美愉悦。
  例如我新近创作的黄龙玉雕《女娲补天》,据说远古水神共工和火神祝融交战时,共工被祝融打败后,气得用头去撞西方的不周山,将这座撑天的大柱撞塌了,天上出了一个巨大的窟窿,大地也被震裂。裂口中喷出的火焰燃烧着人间房屋和庄稼。洪水漫过两岸,人类生活的地方变成了…片汪洋大海。女娲为救苦救难,在黄河边挑选许多五彩石,加热或熔化后,再把天上的洞补起来。九天九夜过去后,天边才又重现五色云霞。作品以一块含红黄龙玉,刻画烧红的天际、挺身托举补天彩石的黄袍龙尾造型的女祸和腾空鼎力相助的神龙,画面色彩绚丽、人物动态感人。
  识玉难,研玉更难!然而为了谋生为了创新,必须知难而上。不论是坚硬的翡翠。稍软的缅甸玉、新兴的黄龙玉,均须坚持软硬兼攻勤创新,古今中外敢雕造。对材料喜新不厌旧,对作品创新不守旧,是我始终如一的研玉准则,藕有新面目的,在雕塑的语言上,形体的表现上,甚至连雕塑材料的选择上都需要突破。
  1.雕塑材料
  优秀的雕塑,除了内容的深邃,形式的生动感人,语言的独具匠心外,材料的选用上也有着非常重要的作用。成功力作,很大程度上受所用材料质地的直接影响。语言形式表现力发挥的充分与否,相应条件下取决于材料。各种材质因其不同的性能,会带给观者不一样的感觉,形成各种意想不到的效果。例如岩石坚硬质朴,青铜高雅抒情,陶土稚拙坦诚,木头温暖柔情……很长时间笔者一直在寻找什么材料能最好地表现自己的创作构想。
  天然大漆,又名国漆、生漆、土漆、木漆等,是我国的土特产之一,天然生漆就是人工从漆树割取的天然漆树液。中国人用漆的历史长达七千年,史书上关于漆最早的记载,出现在《韩非子》里,早在尧舜禹时代,漆器就已经成为部落联盟领袖使用的奢华之物了。从新石器时代第一件漆器的发现,到战国时期的繁荣,到唐代的空前发展,再到明清时期的百花齐放,漫长的岁月中,漆被赋予了浓郁的东方气质。生漆具有防腐蚀、耐强酸、耐强碱、防潮绝缘、耐高温等特征。经过提炼的大漆可以与不同的矿物质调和成各种颜色,加入铁变黑,加入朱砂则变赤,这些幻化而成的色彩,或明亮,或温婉,或雅静,满足了不同人的审美情趣,也让漆的包容性与可塑性得以彰显。可以产生晶莹剔透。

己亲自到东南亚考察,选取石材,并采购了一批适合于做雕塑作品的翡翠原石。
  不是每个雕塑家都可以选择这样的材料的,因为它太过于昂贵了,用翡翠做雕塑损耗也很大,一旦失败将会造成经济上的巨大损失,而现时我们的雕塑家还不是很富裕,有的甚至还是贫穷的。早在20世纪60年代,意大利的一些贫穷艺术家他们用废品做为雕塑材料。有意味的是,这些贫穷的艺术诞生在富裕的意大利的北方,艺术家用最廉价的材料做成的前卫作品攻击北方发达城市保守的艺术趣味。艺术在此时已经从贫困演变成政治的符号。但材料的贵贱并不等同于作品的高低,更多的时候材料跟雕塑家的性格和眼力有关。有人选择低成本的材料,自然也有人选择高成本的材料,多年前就有人用钻石做成骷髅雕塑,一时价格飙升。现在只要有人想到的材料,他们都会去尝试。相对石头、木头、玻璃等普遍的材料,用翡翠作为雕塑作品的并不多。现在市面出现或陈列于博物馆里的翡翠大都是没有艺术家签名的工艺品。很多时候,翡翠作为一种材料已经被工艺品化,它在工艺师的手中是一种美丽的控制。做工艺的人不会做雕塑,做雕塑的人觉得翡翠太过于昂贵,雕刻起来不好把握。确实,用翡翠做雕塑是冒险的。翡翠的价格昂贵,没有雄厚的财力很难支撑艺术家去选择这样的材料。没人收藏或购买流通,艺术品就成为积压,这也是很多雕塑家所顾虑的。
  许鸿飞不愧是有魄力的雕塑家,他敢于冒险,因为他看到一种永恒的材料,他想还原翡翠本来内敛、慧心的气质,还原翡翠在流行文化之外的另一种艺术品质,塑造出翡翠的君子之气和文人之风。稀少的翡翠本来就是中国老百姓眼中的奢侈品,如果一件有艺术性的翡翠作品,它无疑比同样是手镯、戒指什么的翡翠更有收藏的价值。出乎许鸿飞意料的是,他那些翡翠雕塑作品还在做模型的阶段已经被人订购了。姑且不论许鸿飞这批翡翠雕塑的艺术含金量,单其炙手可热的求购已说明他这批作品受欢迎的程度。日本当代艺术鬼才村上隆曾说过他对艺术品的评判标准:“能否经得起拍卖市场等流通市场的考验,作品出现在流通市场时,可否创造数十倍,数百倍的价值。”这些年,许鸿飞的雕塑作品无论在拍卖会上或收藏上都赢得市场的青睐,这使他很自信,许鸿飞选择了昂贵的材料,却没有让他倾家荡产,他的作品所带来的视觉文化的生产和消费没有让他空着肚子来搞艺术,这一点他是非常幸运的。在市场经济里面,艺术作品必须当作一种商品来对待,一种像其他商品一样可以买卖的东西来对待。作为国家一级美术师的许鸿飞因其作品的知名度引来众多的收藏家和买家,这也保证了他在做雕塑时对材料选择的余地大于别人。
  雕塑对于色彩从来都是力不从心。雕塑很难像油画一样在材质的协调。颜色的运用、题材的选择上做到和谐的统一。用

  讦鸿飞不仅仅在材料上有所转移,他也渴望在观念上有所转移,像摩尔一样唤起自然的力量,唤起石头、水和风的力量使作品完整。翡翠也是人生,在与翡翠亲密接触的过程中,许鸿飞获得了更多自己的人生感悟,他找到单纯的资质,找到重塑自我的力量,同时也渴望带给他者供感悟的契机。此时,翡翠不仅仅是石的自身,而是至美的艺术品,它倾注了艺术家的才华,凝集了艺术家的气息,唤醒了自然的记忆,撩起被世俗遮蔽的面纱,呈现出它和艺术家共有的通透、豁达、温润和想象力。

San Jose, Ca. – At ESC DESIGN West here, source-code analysis specialist GrammaTech took the wraps off its next-generation software architecture visualization system.

According to Paul Anderson, VP of Engineering at GrammaTech, the new system incorporates a sophisticated new interface for viewing the relationships between software program elements. The system has been integrated with CodeSonar, GrammaTech’s static-analysis tool for detecting defects.

CodeSonar is a sophisticated static-analysis tool that performs a whole-program, interprocedural analysis on C/C++ code, and identifies complex programming bugs that can result in system crashes, memory corruption, concurrency errors and other serious problems.

According to Anderson the growing complexity of large software systems makes it more difficult for developers to test and analyze the interrelationships between elements of source code.

He said the CodeSonar visualization has been designed to optimize visual inspection and analysis of software, with real-time, fluid transitions for developers to visualize massive data sets to work at different levels of abstraction. The software makes extensive use of the graphics processing unit (GPU), is very high performance and can handle very large code bases (10M+ lines of code).

“Typically, text editors show just a few dozen lines of code at a time,” Anderson said. “Currently available visualization tools are effective at displaying small-scale parts of the program structure such as fragments of class hierarchies and subsets of the call graph, but it is infeasible to use those tools to show whole-program structures.Even for small projects, such tools become unusable because of complexity and performance.”

The new program-visualization capability was specifically designed to perform well on millions of lines of code. It presents data in a layered fashion, so users can choose to see only the information appropriate to the desired level of abstraction.

“Users can explore the program in a top-down fashion, starting with the outermost high-level modules and zooming in to reveal detail at a finer granularity; or can take a bottom-up approach if that is more appropriate to the task.”

CodeSonar visualization displays the program’s call graph organized according to the module structure of the program. Graph layouts can be changed in real time and present data in tree, map, circuit, cluster, flow, radial and other layouts. Data is featured in a layered way that provides a high-level view with drill-down capability; users can explore the program from the bottom up as well.

The new tool capability also includes other program understanding and navigation features, and supports annotations and sharing of diagrams between team members. Anderson said that with this capability, users can start at individual functions to gain insight from a bottom-up perspective, annotate nodes and edges with additional information and overlay the visualization with information on defects and source-code metrics such as complexity.

Other features include the ability of users to search the graph for functions of interest, view the graph in a variety of different layouts, and navigate to and from the source code of the program. In addition, the architecture is extensible, so users can generate graphs from other sources, feed them in an XML format to the tool and see them in the same user interface.

  28日起,一场别开生面的“象形雨花石展”在南京雨花台风景区的雨花石博物馆举行,888枚“象形雨花石”让人大开眼界。榴莲果、芒果、葡萄……博物馆里,一盘盘几乎乱真的“果肴”让人称奇,460枚雨花石组成的“华夏盛宴”更让人垂涎,“油炸鸡腿”、“烤卤猪头”、“白扒广肚”。这些雨花石来自南京雨花石协会副秘书长、摄影家汤先锋的收藏。整个展览为期两个月,5月28日结束。

  几天前的一个下午,当记者走进汤先锋的家时,你会发现没地方插脚,满地都是一个个盘子、碟子。“盘子里都是石头,这是一桌水果宴席。”老汤拿起一个梨子让记者品尝,知道这位玩家,玩的是石头,所以记者不敢对梨子开口。于是他自己将梨子放进嘴里,咬了一口,是真的梨子。接着,老汤又从盘子里拿起几个罗汉果,有了前面的诚意,记者毫不犹豫地伸手去接,没想到这次上当了。老汤说,他忙了一夜,就是给这些石头打扮,按照水果的分类,装上不同的把子。

  扬子晚报记者看到,这桌水果宴有数十道,分3个玻璃转盘,最中间的是一组葡萄,一个椭圆白瓷盘里盛着紫红色的密植葡萄,周边6个瓷盘也全是葡萄。外围的两层盘子里,苹果、梨子、柿子、杏子、芒果、香蕉等水果一应俱全,3层共盛了满满56盘178枚雨花石,组成“硕果飘香”系列。

  “糖藕”里灌米饭还冒热气

  “水果宴”只是汤先锋展览的配角,共123盘的“华夏盛宴”还没“开席”。在客厅背后,有一间密室,很少让外人进。记者走进这间大约10个平方的房间,一张罗汉床上没有任何铺盖,只有几块玻璃台板,板上摆放着一个个用塑料膜密封的盘子。“这张床是件古董,原先买下是想给客人歇息的,但客厅全都被石头占据了,我自己也不曾坐过它,只好让位给石头了。”

  除了罗汉床摆满了“石盘”,床边也堆放着一个个很大的塑料箱子,里面全是密封好的瓷盘。老汤随便打开一个,一段“糖藕”展现在眼前。老汤说这是他的看家宝贝,不仅外形逼真,就连莲藕里面的空心都惟妙惟肖,空心中居然还灌满了米饭,仿佛冒着热气,从炉子上刚刚端下来。而一盘“紫茄子”更是叫绝,靠近把子的润色清晰可见,可谓是绝品。

  他就这样爱上了石头

  穿越沙漠时捡到一块“烤红薯”

  作为玩家,老汤玩石头10年都不到,之所以他玩出了名堂,靠的全是独特的创新意识。老汤告诉记者,七八年前,他背着摄影包,穿越蒙古的沙漠上。一次他坐在沙漠中,偶然一伸手从沙子中摸出一块石头,活像个烤红薯。从小生活在徐州农村,老汤说如果没有红薯,他活不到今天,红薯对他有着“救命之恩”。他没有丢弃这块戈壁石,把它塞进了摄影包中。

  从此,老汤开始与石头结下渊源,他开始四处寻找这样的石头。可是,他跑来跑去,南京玩石头的人,大部分都是玩放在水中看图纹的雨花石,哪有什么象形石?可老汤有股不服输的劲头,他经过在六合和仪征等地无数次的寻访,如愿以偿。说来也巧,居然他在清凉山又寻到一枚“山芋”,比那枚戈壁石还要逼真。

  专门收藏蛋形石,已有三千枚

  对六合当地采石的乡民来说,老汤相中的石头,他们根本就没往眼里去,要想寻找,必须得亲自上山。为此,老汤专门买了一辆车,一到周末就出发。有时一去就是一整天,连饭都顾不上吃。一次,老汤为了寻找石头,爬上了采石场的悬崖,不小心脚下一滑,他连人带相机滚下七八十米的山谷,同去的石友过了半天才找到他。

  从此,老汤玩石头玩命出了名,当地乡民见他就开玩笑说:“玩蛋来了。”因为,老汤有阵子专门挑雨花石中的蛋形石买,大伙也知道他的“怪癖”。开始,大家都很便宜地卖给他,后来,2009年老汤举办了展览,出版画册,大伙一下明白了,原来那些毛糙的,不起眼的雨花石也是宝贝。后来,跟着老汤的玩法的人越来越多,蛋石价格也越涨越高。他告诉记者,他收藏的各种七彩蛋石,已经达3000多枚。

  填补象形类雨花石的空白

  汤先锋说,他想通过这次展览告诉大家,雨花石不仅是“富人”玩的,老百姓也同样玩得起。而且,他还想证明,玩石头,绝不只是看价钱,最重要的是懂得欣赏,与石头建立友情。看着自己满屋子的石头,老汤说,“我绝不是为了拥有这些石头,我是想通过我的创意,将雨花石推向世界。”

  在老汤心中,传统的玩法,把雨花石放在水中,只看图文,不是不好,但显然过于单一,已经不能与世界接轨。“创作‘华夏盛宴’、‘水果宴’,是为了填补雨花石象形类的空白。希望我的探索,能为雨花石文化开创出一条新路子来。”老汤感慨地说。

  业内人士提醒,买碧玺忌盲目跟风,要综合考虑其质量和稀有程度

  按照惯例,每年开春时节,玉石市场都会迎来旺季.而近两个月,我市翡翠等玉石价格不断下跌.据临海紫阳路古玩集市上的玉石商贩反映,今年玉石几乎卖不动,即使是去年一度被热炒的黄龙玉也遭遇了跌价的命运.

  “疯狂的石头”价格暴跌

  上周六在临海紫阳路上的古玩集市上,玉石商戚亚林说,前几年,翡翠、和田玉等玉石价格很“疯狂”,几乎每一季以10%至15%的幅度增长,部分玉石一年时间能增值50%以上,这些玉石一度被称为“疯狂的石头”.然而,自年前开始,中低档玉石价格持续下滑,高档玉石虽然价格依然坚挺,但普遍呈现有价无市的现象.

  “中低档玉石以次充好的现象非常普遍,自然受到了人们的冷落,价格不断下跌.”戚亚林说.

  另一位玉石商周立新告诉记者,近两个月,低档玉石的价格已下跌25%~30%左右.“我现在每次去进货,低档玉石都不进了,中档玉石我会进多一点,放在店里也能卖出一些.”

  半年间碧玺价格涨一倍

  与玉石命运截然不同的是属中档宝石类的碧玺,随着时尚界刮起的彩色宝石风,碧玺成了投资客的“新宠”.

  “市场上一些不专业的商家介绍碧玺时,往往称它为水晶中的高档品,这是不对的.事实上,水晶是低档宝石,而碧玺属中档宝石.另外,水晶的硬度约6.7度至7.2度.碧玺又称电气石,硬度在7.6度至8.0度左右.”戚亚林说,碧玺常被用来镶嵌,流行于缅甸和泰国.近些年,碧玺采矿业迅猛发展,再加上时尚界的追捧,碧玺有望取代红、蓝宝石,成为消费市场的主流宝石.

  “碧玺计价模式,已由几年前的以‘件’计算改为‘克’计算.半年前,六七十元一克的碧玺,现在涨到了110元至120元了,短短半年时间,碧玺的价格几乎翻了一番.”周立新说.

  据了解,碧玺涨价快,除了颜色艳丽多彩、资源稀缺外,还与很多人信风水有关.碧玺谐音“辟邪”,而且“玺”字与古代的玉玺同字,所以广受欢迎.

  周立新介绍,碧玺共有14种颜色,其中两种颜色最昂贵:一是红色碧玺,红得越鲜艳品级越高;再者是绿色碧玺;与之相比,彩色碧玺的价格就大打折扣.“消费者购买时,不要盲目跟风,要买适合自己的.若是投资和收藏的话,还要考虑碧玺的稀有程度和质量.”周立新提醒到.

SAN JOSE, Calif.—Analog mixed-signal IC vendor Exar Corp. said Wednesday (March 28) it has eliminated about 40 percent of its global headcount in the past two months.

Exar (Fremont, Calif.) said it cut about 120 jobs Wednesday, or 30 percent of its worldwide headcount. The company eliminated 53 positions last month, Exar said.

Together, Exar expects the layoffs and other actions to save the company nearly $22 million per year, the company said.

"We believe that our remaining headcount of approximately 270 people is adequate and appropriate to support our needs in sales, marketing, product development, finance, human resources and other functional disciplines while we drive growth in our target markets," said Louis DiNardo, Exar's president and CEO, in a statement. "Our basic cost structure is sound; we have a major design center in China, a majority of test operations offshore and we are now a lean organization."

DiNardo said Exar was "very comfortable" with the company's ability to recruit and retain top talent to support product development in its areas of focus.

Exar outlined its areas of product focus, including power management and control, data compression and security, connectivity and interface, and high-performance analog mixed-signal.

DiNardo said Exar is on track to hit its sales targets in the current quarter and that the company's bookings have improved compared to the previous quarter. Exar also sees positive signs in sales through its channel partners, DiNardo said.

Indian design firms eye chip IP model




BANGALORE, India – When Ittiam Systems, a media processing company here, said last week that more than 35 percent of its $20 million in annual revenues came from licensing its intellectual property, one observer called it a “landmark” for the company, adding that it was “an encouraging sign for the new generation technology companies in India.”

Ittiam is one of the few Indian companies to successfully deploy an IP licensing model, with sales of about $7 million. That’s small by global standards, but significant here. Another Indian company, Cosmic Circuits, a provider of analog and mixed-signal IP cores, has since announced it “aims to be a major player in semiconductor IP.”

“Cosmic started with power management IP in 2005 and has over 300 IP [offerings] and also solutions at 28 nm,” said CEO Ganapathy Subramaniam. “We estimate that over 50 million ICs have been shipped with Cosmic IP. We wanted to expand our portfolio and decided to focus on the connectivity IPs. We are now developing solutions for PCI Express, USB3.0, USB2.0 and HDMI apart from MIPI DPHY and MPHY in 28 nm and 20 nm.”

The early success of Ittiam and Cosmic illustrates the shift in India from design projects for overseas chip companies to generating and retaining chip IP.

According to Ganesh Ramamoorthy, research director at Gartner: “As is the tradition in the Indian technology sphere, most Indian companies try and avoid the risks associated with a product business – low margins, high development and marketing costs, rapid technological changes, ongoing R&D investments and, last but not the least, product acceptance by consumers in a market filled with” large, established players. This aversion to risk has prompted most Indian electronics companies to pursue the safer services business.

Cosmic is targeting what Ramamoorthy called the “wired interface IP market.” During 2010, that market was worth $305 million and is estimated to grow at a compound annual rate of nearly 11 percent through 2015 to $508 million.

India has trailed the rest to the industry in IP generation due to factors like high investment costs needed to acquire the necessary tools for IP generation, the lack of qualified analog/mixed signal engineers and the absence of a local ecosystem. Even if Indian companies could generate IP, few product companies would license this IP, said Deepa Doraiswamy, an analyst with Frost & Sullivan.

“Semiconductor IP creation is a long-drawn process where the IP has to be proven before it is marketed,” added Venkat Mattela, chairman and CEO of Redpine Signals. That means several silicon tape outs, reference designs and other time-consuming steps. “This requires spending a lot of time with experts, [it] means burning cash,” Mattela added. Indian engineers “are more inclined towards doing software where the results could be obtained much sooner, hence semiconductor IP development is lagging.

Still, some industry trends offer hope for more IP development here. India accounted for less than 1 percent of global chip IP in 2005, but currently produces about 5.5 percent, Doraiswamy estimated. That makes India the second largest IP producer along with the U.K.

Doraiswamy added that growing expertise in mixed-signal IP for wireless applications could become a key niche for Indian developers.

Time-to-market pressures and shortened product life cycles may also work to the advantage of Indian IP developers. “As a result, we believe that the standards-based interface IP market offers significant growth opportunity for third-party semiconductor design IP vendors like Cosmic Circuits,” said Ramamoorthy of Gartner.

Either way, companies like Ittiam and Cosmic Circuits seem determined to make some noise in the chip IP market as others here continue to focus on traditional chip design services.

The UBM Electronics ACE Awards recognize and honors the people and companies behind the technologies and new products that are changing the world of electronics globally.

A panel of EE Times editors narrowed down the entries to five finalists in each category, based on the criteria set forth in an online submission form. Winners were determined from among the finalists by a panel of independent judges. Judging took place from Nov. 1, 2011, to Jan. 6, 2012.

"It was a challenge for our judges to select one winner in each category from all of the creative and innovative technologies represented by the finalists," said Junko Yoshida, editor in chief of EE Times. "The winners have proven that they are pioneers in developing and implementing breakthroughs in electronics. We hope this awards program gives companies worldwide the impetus to stretch their imaginations and their resources for even more progress in the coming year."

'Thermal cloak' to dissipate heat in electronics



MANHASSET, NY -- A team of French researchers have found a way of isolating or cloaking objects from sources of heat by diffusing the heat around the objects.

The “thermal cloaking” method taps into some of the same principles as optical cloaking and may lead to novel ways to control heat in electronics.

Recent advances in invisibility cloaks are based on the physics of transformation optics, which involves metamaterials and bending light so that it propagates around a space rather than through it. The French researchers investigated whether a similar approach might be possible for thermal diffusion.

“Our key goal with this research was to control the way heat diffuses in a manner similar to those that have already been achieved for waves, such as light waves or sound waves, by using the tools of transformation optics,” said researcher Guenneau Sebastien.

Guenneau is affiliated with both the University of Aix-Marseille and France’s Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CRNS).

The researchers applied the mathematics of transformation optics to equations for thermal diffusion to create their thermal invisibility cloak. They altered the geometry of isotherms to make them go around rather than through a circular region so that any object placed in this region can be shielded from the flow of heat.

“We can design a cloak so that heat diffuses around an invisibility region, which is then protected from heat. Or we can force heat to concentrate in a small volume, which will then heat up very rapidly,” Guenneau said.

Guenneau and colleagues said they are developing prototypes of their thermal cloaks for microelectronics, which they expect to have ready within the next few months.

The original research paper was first reported in the journal Optics Express.

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Will the rapidly increasing processing power being enabled by many-core processors cause the advent of machines with super-human intelligence, an event sometimes referred to as the singularity?

That was the question put to a panel of some of the best minds in multicore processor theory and design assembled on Tuesday (March 27) by analyst Jon Peddie at the Multicore DevCon, part of DESIGN West being held here this week. A small but enthusiastic audience was there to listen.

Peddie set up the debate by referencing Vernor Vinge, a science fiction writer, who had predicted that computing power would be equivalent to human processing power by about 2023. One particular aspect of the concept of the singularity is that once machines either in single units or collectively exceed human intelligence there may be an explosion of machine learning advancement that it would not be possible for humans to fathom, by definition, making the singularity a kind of event horizon.

Another extrapolation of computing progress had 2045 as the year in which it might be possible to buy a machine with the processing power of human brain for $2,000 in 2045.

Pradeep Dubey of Intel parallel computing labs illustrated the progress by saying that a petaflops supercomputer can already simulate a cat's brain. A human brain has 20 to 30 times more neurons and 1,000 times more synapses, he said, so the complete simulation of human brain is only a matter of a 5 or 6 years away. "Exaflops could simulate a human brain," he said.

Dubey said there are currently three approaches: simulate the process with a neuron- and synapse-level model; ignore brain architecture and treat the problem as data and statistical problem; or to build hardware that mimics neurons and synapses.

However, the simulation of the brain is not the same as thinking or generating the emotional intelligence we see in human beings, said Ian Oliver director of Codescape development tools at processor licensor Imagination Technologies Group plc. "We probably have the wrong memory model. The human brain is non-deterministic. It operates on the edge of chaos," he said.

Oliver pointed out that the use of genetic algorithms to derive FPGA designs through evolution produced much more brain-like architectures but were not readily usable in the real world and as such computer and human intelligence appeared to be distinct.

Mike Rayfield, vice president of the mobile business unit at Nvidia argued that the number of processor cores is a red herring. But Intel's Dubey countered that more cores is better saying that massive data engines can capture correlations if not causality. He pointed out that machines can already do some things far better than humans, which is the reason they exist. "We can build planes but we can't build birds," he said.

(Thame, England), a pioneer of high-level modeling and virtual prototyping, has models of the ARM Cortex-A15 processor in beta and expects them to be available in the first half of 2012. The range of available models, together with Imperas tool and operating system support, is helping platform and software developers debug systems in parallel with SoC design, speeding up and improving system development, the company said.

The support of the Renesas V850 architecture for microcontrollers has helped Imperas win work in the automotive domain, Lapides said.

OVP processor models are instruction accurate and employ a use a method of just-in-time code transformation to accelerate simulation speeds. The processor models can also be integrated into SystemC/TLM2 based virtual platforms using the native TLM2 interface available with all OVP models. The OVP simulator can also be encapsulated within the Eclipse IDE, enabling easy use for software developers.

In addition to models Imperas offers the Open Virtual Platform (OVP) simulator OVPsim that executes the models. The use of the open-source models, verified to accurately demonstrate the processor behavior, allows users to put together a simulation model of a platform, compile it to an executable, and connect it to a debugger to provide an embedded software development environment before an SoC has been manufactured. This allows software to be run and bugs to be caught, even extending to errors in compilers, the company said.

Simon Davidmann, founder and CEO of Imperas, said that the offering of virtual platforms for processor-FPGA platforms by Altera and Xilinx had helped business as it had validated the high-level modeling concept. "In fact it is our technology in the Xilinx Zynq virtual platform."

Imperas is now also offering the M*SDK set of Eclipse-based debug tools for use with OVPsim and fast processor models. And has validated support for a variety of operating systems running on top of software simulations. The speed of OVPsim makes the running of portions of applications feasible.

OS support now includes: Linux, Nucleus, uC/OS and FreeRTOS amongst others, said Lapides. "And, of course, Android sits on top of Linux, which opens up a broad applications space," said Davidmann.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Akustica is entering the mobile device market with its first analog microphone, a low-cost two-chip solution that it hopes will widen its market share.

The Bosch subsidiary pioneered the single-chip digital MEMS microphone back in 2006, when its biggest competition was analog mics designed for hearing aids.

Akustica is the world leader in digital MEMS microphones with its elegant one-chip CMOS solution that has captured the lion's share of the microphone market for digital devices like laptop computers. However, the larger mobile phone market has been slow to adopt digital microphones, opting instead to stick with the ultra-inexpensive analog microphones produced by high-volume manufacturers like Knowles Acoustics (Itaska, Ill.). Now Akustica, backed by Bosch's high-volume manufacturing capabilities, hopes to carve out a bigger share of the billion-unit mobile phone market.
